6 Mistakes You Are Making as a Business Owner

“Growth is never by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together.” – James Cash Penney

Running a business isn’t for the faint of heart. I’ve been there—late nights, tough decisions, and plenty of moments when I had to learn the hard way. If you’re a business owner, I’m here to share some of the biggest mistakes I’ve seen (and made) over the years, so you don’t have to make them, too.

Not Knowing Your Numbers

Look, I get it. As entrepreneurs, we thrive on big ideas and passion. But if you don’t know the financial side of your business inside out, you’re setting yourself up for a rude awakening. Profit margins, cash flow, customer acquisition costs—you need to know these cold. Trust me, staying on top of your numbers isn’t just for the “accounting types.” It’s for anyone who wants to keep their doors open and lights on.

Trying to Do Everything Yourself

When I first started, I wore every hat imaginable: marketer, accountant, customer service rep, and even coffee runner. The problem? Burnout. You can’t (and shouldn’t) do it all. Hiring the right people and delegating responsibilities isn’t just smart; it’s necessary. Give up a little control, and you’ll gain back sanity—and, surprisingly, productivity.

Ignoring Customer Feedback

This one can sting. When someone criticizes your business, it feels personal. But ignoring feedback is a fast track to irrelevance. Our customers are the best source of insight we have, and being open to their input is how we improve. Sure, not every piece of feedback will be golden, but listening is what counts. Engage, ask questions, and be willing to change.

Underestimating the Power of Marketing ROI

I’ve seen so many business owners throw money at marketing without understanding what’s actually working. It’s like pouring water into a bucket with holes. Data-driven marketing has been my bread and butter for a reason: it shows you where to spend and what to skip. Measure everything you can, tweak as needed, and don’t be afraid to shift strategies if the data says so.

Skipping Self-Care

I’m guilty of this one. There were stretches where I thought non-stop work was a badge of honor. Spoiler: it’s not. You can’t lead a business if you’re running on empty. Make time for yourself. Whether it’s family, hobbies, or just getting enough sleep, it all matters. The healthier you are, the better leader you’ll be.

Failing to Plan for Growth

You’ve probably heard the phrase, “What got you here won’t get you there.” It’s true. Too many of us hit our initial goals and then plateaued because we didn’t have a plan for what was next. It could be anything from scaling up operations, expanding into new markets, and refining your product; always be thinking about growth. If you don’t, your competitors definitely will.
